Setting a static IP Address means that the DNS323 will always be at the same place on your local network. This avoids problems that can be caused by different devices on the network getting different addresses as they are switched on and off at different times or in different orders.
Make sure the DNS323 is switched on and that you know the IP Address that it is using. If you know that address click here to skip down the page.
Open the D-Link Easy Search Utility, click the Refresh button near the top right_hand corner and the utility should find your DNS323 and show the details.
The IP Address that you want is highlighted in this screenshot, on your system it will probably be different.
Write this down ready for the next stage.
Also write down the Gateway address so you can check it later.
Use the IP address you wrote down to open the configuration pages on the DNS323. This example shows the Firefox browser, your browser may look different.
When the login box appears use your administrator login and password then click the Configuration button to get access to the setup. If you have not yet set the admin password then leave that field blank.
When the DNS323 responds you will see the main menu as shown below, click on the SETUP button, then the LAN button on the next page.
You will now see the LAN (Local Area Network) setup, as shown below.
Note that the current settings are shown here, the DHCP Client setting means that the DNS323 will ask your router for an IP Address each time the DNS323 is switched on. Also note that the existing IP Address is shown to the right and is 'greyed out' meaning that you can't change it.
Change the DNS323 to a Static IP Address by clicking the small circle (radio button) to the left of Static IP, when you do the text boxes will become available to type into - see next screenshot.
Check that the IP Address is the same as you wrote down and also that the Gateway IP address is what you write down. Confirm the Subnet Mark is 255.255.255.0.
If there are numbers in the DNS1 and DNS2 boxes leave them as they are, then finally click the Save Settings button.
This will save the changes and log you out of the D-Link setup because you have changed the IP Address setup. You should login again using your admin password and check that the changes that you made we correctly saved.
That's it . . . every time your DNS323 starts up it will use the IP Address that you set.
If you intend to access the DNS323 network storage using ftp (file transfer protocol) over the internet then you may need to change settings on your router. Instructions for the D-Link DI-524.
